I took a mini-hiatus last week due to the election and start of school for me. But I am back with posting regularly!
What books have you started that you need to finish by the end of the year?
This year I’ve really gotten into reading more than one book at a time, which has caused this dilemma of having four books on my currently reading shelf for WAY too long. For starters, I want to finish Sour Heart by Jenny Zhang and World of Wonders by Aimee Nezhukumatathil. Both of these books I began reading before attending events with the respective authors and never got around to finishing. Whoops! I also really want to finish Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel. I started reading this both because (1) I want to read pandemic books and (2) I was going to write a paper on it for class. Then I (1) got freaked out by how realistic it was and (2) changed my paper topic. It was reading fast though, so I think I’ll be able to finish it. The last book that’s been stuck on my currently reading shelf since literally March is Living a Feminist Life by Sara Ahmed. I LOVE Sara Ahmed. So much. So reading this has been slow going because I want to take notes on each chapter. But with the subject matter aligning well with one of my courses, I am determined to finish it this semester.
Do you have an autumnal book to transition into the end of the year?
This question is exactly why this tag is meant to be done in September or October. But YES. Before Autumn (or at least, 2020) is over, I am really hoping to pick up The Secret History. I will not let this one waste away on my TBR shelf!
Are there any new releases you’re still waiting for?
I am so behind on keeping up with new releases this year, so there’s that. At this late in the year, most books I’m excited about have already released, but one book that recently caught my attention is Written in the Stars by Alexandria Bellefleur, debuting this week! I am really just obsessed with any sapphic romance. A few other notable titles for me are Mediocre: The Dangerous Legacy of White Male America by Ijeoma Oluo and What We Don’t Talk About When We Talk About Fat by Aubrey Gordon, both of which seem right up my alley in terms of non-fiction. I have yet to pick up The Poppy War series, but I am pretty excited to see The Burning God coming out this month. Starting a series when I know it has been completed just sits right in my soul. I’m already forming my new releases list for 2021!
Is there a book you think could still shock you and become your favorite book of the year?
I definitely think so. I haven’t really began ranking my books into the favorites of the year (although I have some ideas in mind), so there’s not one amazing book that every read has to stack up against. This year I’ll be reading The Invisible Life of Addie Larue by V.E. Schwab, which I’ve heard so many great reviews of, and I could definitely see becoming a new favorite. A couple others I’m really anticipating is His Only Wife by Peace Adzo Medie, The Henna Artist by Alka Joshi, and Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo.
What are three books you want to read before the end of the year?
There are SO MANY. But three I am determined to read by 2021 are:
- The Midnight Library by Matt Haig
- Real Men Knit by Kwana Jackson
- The Inconvenient Indian by Thomas King
Have you already started making reading plans for 2021?
You know I have! In addition to new releases, I’m hoping to reread a lot of books in 2021 (maybe do a month of only rereads?) and there’s a lot of backlist books, big books, and YA contemporaries I’m hoping to get to. I’m already getting excited about all my ideas for 2021!
